Middle School Math Competitions

Instructor

Kennon McCaa will teach the Middle School Math Competitions summer program. Kennon’s son, Carter, won the Manatee County Math Super Stars competition in 5th grade, finished in 3rd place in the Myakka District of MathCOUNTS and went to the state competition in 8th grade.

This is a one week program. The dates are June 10 – 14 from 1 PM – 4 PM at Transformative Tutoring in Osprey. The price of this program is $300.

This course is scheduled for the beginning of summer so that students might become inspired enough to spend a portion of their summer free time utilizing their new math skills to do additional competition problems. Links to additional problems are given near the end of this page.

Who Should Attend

Students in middle school in the 2019-2020 school year who love math and problem solving. Students are not required to be on their school math team.

Overview

The middle school math competitions program is meant for middle school students and will focus on topics selected due to their frequency of appearance in MathCOUNTS as well as their frequency on the SAT. Studying these topics are a great way to prepare for taking the SAT in 7th grade to qualify for Duke TIP & Johns Hopkins CTY talent youth programs. The topics will be:

  • Percents and Proportional Thinking
  • Perfect Squares, Simplifying Radicals & Difference of Squares
  • Pythagorean Theorem & Pythagorean Triples
  • Probability, Factorials, Combinations & Permutations
  • Geometry, Triangles, Rectangles, Circles, Area, Perimeter, Volume
  • Mental Math
  • Mean, Median & Mode

Sample Problems

MathCOUNTS publishes the questions from past competitions on the MathCOUNTS website. We will use problems from prior competitions and the annual school handbook for learning and competitions. The Art of Problem Solving also has a MathCOUNTS trainer website.
